Absence Of Doubt

A “Meehan Brothers” FILM
WRITTEN BY Chad Meehan

A writer, Frank Newsome, going through a messy divorce meets a young woman, Emma, who is a big fan of his work. He starts a relationship with her to the disgust of his wife, Joan, who sees it as a mid life crisis fling. He begins to feel better about himself and tidies up his appearance.

However things start to go wrong as he finds himself the victim of some suspicious accidents, hurting him and seeming to delight his vengeful wife and he realises that his life insurance is still lists Joan as the benefactor. Emma encourages him to go to the police and when they make a complaint she is very insistent that Joan should be kept well away from them. She lists a lot of accidents that have taken place and even ones he can’t remember. Later the accidents continue, including the ones his girlfriend had listed.

Frank begins to wonder who he can trust. He searches through Emma’s things and finds a bank account in another name that links her to a book, Absence Of Doubt, he had written many years before about a convicted killer who had killed his family but always pleaded his innocence. The writer had been damning of the killer, ending any chance of a retrial. The more he digs the clearer the connection becomes and he realises the danger he is in.

The similarities between his own life and that of the subject of his book are becoming eerily close and Frank begins to doubt the conviction of his own work as well as the safety of himself and his children.
