Broadcast Safe

A “My Film” FILM
WRITTEN BY Andrew Dean

When applying for a consent to erect a television aerial for the Motukarara community hall, brothers Graham and Eric Fiddler are mistakenly granted a television broadcast license. As any good Kiwi blokes would, they build a transmitter out of junkyard parts and have a go at running a TV station.

Sorting through salvage equipment, Graham discovers a curious white object emitting a faint signal of what appears to be odd versions of classic TV programming. Bored with mooning the camera while making fart jokes, the brothers decide to amplify the mysterious signal and put it on the air.

The surreal and sometimes risque shows coming out of the device become wildly popular and the station gains national attention. However, things take a substantial turn for the weird when a scientist shows up with proof the programming is extraterrestrial in origin. He theorizes that something out there has misinterpreted Earth's TV broadcasts as an attempt to communicate and is trying to respond, using television shows as a form of language.

What message are they trying to send? And what message did they think we sent them? Are the shows meant to be a friendly greeting across the stars, a warning of an approaching disaster, a declaration of war, or is there something hypnotic and deadly encoded into the signal itself?
