Drummer Girl

A “Verity Visual Pictures” FILM
WRITTEN BY Keryn Johns

In a suburban town, Bailey a 14 year old girl lives in a middle class home with her young parents. She struggles to get along with her father, who keeps himself closed off. Her friends are all older than her and when a new guy aged 17 joins the group they start going out. She watches him play on his drum kit but he won’t let her play it, insisting that girls are not good drummers. He only wants her to be a singer in his band. In a moment of anger Bailey thrashes his drums, the beat pumps through her veins and she knows she wants to be a drummer.

At a concert, Bailey reads a poster for an upcoming drum battle competition, she dreams of winning it but without her own drum kit she has to find other ways to practice. Bailey attempts to convince her father to get her a kit but he’s not impressed by her drumming. She gets a job to earn some money and becomes friends with Vera, a 14 year old girl. Vera’s sister is a well-known drummer and helps Bailey develop her skills. Bailey’s boyfriend finds out she has kept her competition entry quiet; hating the thought of his girlfriend being better than him, he gives her an ultimatum. Now she will need to find a way to connect with her father if she wants to pursue her dream.

Bailey must struggle through teenage dramas: boys, friends and preoccupied parents, while trying to achieve a dream that no-one else believes in.
