The Flower Pot

A “Mwitu Films” FILM
WRITTEN BY Nina Katungi

It’s the summer of 1973 and Olivia returns to her childhood home for her younger sister, Sami’s, wedding. It’s been six years since Olivia’s been home and everybody is anticipating her arrival. Her sudden departure after the summer of 1967 caused turmoil within the once, close, family. Olivia’s mother died that summer, the long battle with cancer had sadly come to an end. Olivia and her mother were very close, as a child, a teenager, and an adult the two were hardly ever seen apart. So it came as a shock to everyone when Olivia was not by her mother’s side the night she passed. Where was she? Until this day, Olivia’s whereabouts have been a mystery.

Olivia is aware that her return will cause a stir of questions. She knows she can’t run anymore and that she must come to terms with the past for the sake of herself, her mother, and bride to be, Sami. But Olivia can’t expect everything to be the same as it was six years ago and has failed to realise that despite her absence, the family have continued on without her. Her father has remarried and has accepted a new soul into the house. Sami has found her feet and now stands strong and confident without her older sister’s guidance. Places, people, and her home as she remembered them are no longer the same. Olivia not only re-visits the summer of 1967 but her entire childhood too… it seems as though the cracks within the family were visible long before her mother’s passing.

Against the beautiful backdrop of the Coromandel, the story will come to life in its glistening beaches, hidden coves, and wild bush. The hot, summer sun will create a golden image while the cicadas will resonate in sound. “The Flower Pot” will unfold in this idyllic setting tainted by the hidden secrets of Olivia’s past.
