When April starts her teaching practice at an extremely wealthy private school, she has no idea how old some traditions really are.

When April Seers is given a teaching section at a rich private school, she can't wait to see how the other half is educated. Her initial apprehension at working in such a strange setting is calmed when she learns that the associate Biology teacher was her high school dean.

On her first day, April is asked if she would like to accompany the year 13 scholarship class on a week long field trip to a remote bay near Kaikoura. The trip, a study of sea life in the area, would be a fantastic opportunity to connect with the students in the class.

Upon their arrival, April strikes a connection with another new comer to the school, exchange student Maya. After a freak storm confines the party to their cabins Maya starts to open up to April about worrying behaviour she has noticed since starting at the school. As the days pass, and with no sign of the storm relenting, the pair soon find out that things are not what they seem at Baywater High School. Days pass and the students begin to undergo a nefarious transformation into slender skeletal creatures with rows of razor teeth and greyish complexion.

April will soon learn the horrifying truth. Her section, the foreign exchange student, and the trip are not all coincidental, but the work of an ancient cult practising the worship of an old god. Pieces of the jigsaw begin to form and April comes to the realisation that they (April and Maya) have a role to play in the cult's worship. Their efforts to escape may be in vain as April learns that somethings cannot be taught in a classroom.
