Requiem

At the end of humanity, when hope ceases to exist, one man will find the reason for life.

A “Instant Film/Lost You Somewhere Productions” FILM
WRITTEN BY Benjamin & Jude Farry

Sporadic incidents of random violence begin to occur with an ever-increasing frequency across the globe. A woman beats her child to death, before tearing her own eyes from her head; an office worker ties up his fellow employees, douses them in petrol, and then immolates himself alongside them, giggling madly as he burns. At first, they appear as just another day in our dysfunctional world, barely commented upon, until these incidents begin to spike with an alarming regularity, without forewarning or any common evidential thread by which we might make sense of them. The authorities can no longer discount them as random occurrences, but without any real kind of understanding of what’s actually occurring, can do little else but impose a kind of global martial law. Speculation about an undiscovered mental ‘virus’ is suggested from the world of science, a call to prepare for the coming ‘Rapture’ from the fundamental corners of religion, a suggestion that it’s the final stage of human mental evolution, that being, to simply remove ourselves from the equation, is forwarded by the psychiatric community. In amongst the maelstrom we meet Griffin, a disenfranchised, alienated, angry young man. Disillusioned and furious at the obvious frailties in our social structure, the unending lies of our media-driven world and politicians, our latent stupidity and seemingly unquenchable desire to dumb ourselves down further and further, he’s at breaking point. With a history of self-harm and violent public outbursts, he is undertaking court-appointed counselling under Dr James Wishart. He lives with his partner Layla, who quite clearly is the sole oasis in a life that’s rapidly falling apart. As the world disintegrates, trust and hope ceases to exist, and humanity turns upon itself in a dog eat dog battle for survival, these three are forced into a desperate moral and ethical fight, as every rule that has governed the survival of our species is torn away.
